Roy Race A Brief History by Mark Towers

Roy Race soccer star first appeared in Amalgamated Press' new sports and adventure comic, Tiger in September 1954. The first issue showed Roy playing for Milton Youth club in a cup tie. In true storybook fashion the score was 0-0 with only minutes to go, but Roy tireless and still on his toes, pounced on a loose ball and pushed it past a lunging defender and ripped a shot towards goal from the edge of the six yard box, which flew past the visitors' goalkeeper.

Roy of the Rovers and me‏

I would love to say that it was love at first sight but if I'm honest as a young kid I had no interest in the adventures of Roy Race and the mighty Melchester Rovers.

Comics have always been my life and even before I could read every long journey was equipped with a collection of comics for me to look through. Spiderman, Batman, Superman and even the Beano and Dandy comics were my favorites... who wants to read about football when I've got superheroes. My earliest memory of Roy of the Rovers was hearing that Spandau Ballet and the annoying one of Question of Sport (Emlyn Hughes) played for them really turned me off the comic.

So what was it that changed my mind?

Marks and Spencer signs Roy of the Rovers range

Gift line-up includes a mugs, socks, towels and a table football game.

Meld Group has today announced a new deal which will see a range of Roy of the Rovers gift merchandise sold in Marks and Spencer this Christmas.

The range includes: table football, blow football, key rings, quiz cards, hand warmers, a mug and socks, a trophy, a wallet, pinball and towel and will be available in Marks & Spencer stores and online from the end of September 2012.

Stephen Wilkins of Marks & Spencer said: “We instantly felt that Roy of the Rovers was right for our customers. His iconic image and timeless values make him stand out as an all-time comic hero; a true champion in the footballing world and one the nation can be proud of.”

David Riley, managing director of rights owner Egmont Publishing Group, explained: “Roy represents over 40 years of publishing heritage, and is a classic example of an evergreen brand. The soap opera of Roy’s life has engaged with fans young and old, and is as fresh today as ever. We are really excited to be kicking off our licensing programme with such a stunning range of gifting product.”

Ανανεώθηκε το επίσημο site!

Μετά από πολλά χρόνια το επίσημο site www.royoftherovers.com ανανεώθηκε. Απ' ότι διαβάσαμε σύντομα θα είναι διαθέσιμα comic strips για κατέβασμα σε iPhone, tablet  ή κινητό με κόστος £1.99 στο iBooks store. Καλορίζικο και περιμένουμε να εμπλουτιστεί με περισσότερο υλικό!

Αυτό που όλοι περιμένατε!!!

Η μεγάλη έκπληξη από το blog των Ελλήνων φίλων του Roy of the Rovers! Κατεβάστε εντελώς δωρεάν εδώ όλο το comic strip της ιστορίας του Roy όπως δημοσιεύτηκε στο περιοδικό από τον Σεπτέμβριο έως και τον Δεκέμβριο του 1976! Αν το θέλετε θα ακολουθήσουν και οι επόμενες χρονιές! Καλό διάβασμα σε όλους!

Και Ρόι της Ρόβερς και τερματοφύλακας γιατρός!

Ιστορίες από τα ασπρόμαυρα κόμικ που διαβάζαμε παλιά, πολύ παλιά, στο Aγόρι και το Μπλεκ, θύμισε ο ...ηρωικός Ρόι Κάρολ, που οδήγησε τον Ολυμπιακό στην πρόκριση επί της Ρουμπίν Καζάν.

Αυτός έκανε τη διαφορά ανάμεσα στις δυο ομάδες, πρώτα με το πέναλτι που έπιασε ερχόμενος από τον πάγκο μόλις ο Ολυμπιακός έμεινε με 10 παίκτες στη Μόσχα και μετά με τα ...πέντε γκολ που έβγαλε στη ρεβάνς του «Καραϊσκάκη», στο τέλος παίζοντας ακόμα και με ένα πόδι.

Ο Βορειοϊρλανδός, που αποκτήθηκε ως λύση ανάγκης, όχι επειδή προερχόταν από πολυετή καριέρα στη Γιουνάιτεντ, αλλά επειδή έκανε ένα καλό εξάμηνο με τον ...ΟΦΗ (τα μυστήρια του ελληνικού ποδοσφαίρου), ίσως και λόγω «χρωμάτων» και καταγωγής, μου έφερε στο νου τους ηρωισμούς του τερματοφύλακα - γιατρού, Μπεν Λίπερ, που διαβάζαμε στην ...αρχαιότητα στον Μπλεκ (έστω κι αν τώρα χρειάζεται αυτός ...γιατρό), αλλά και το αντίπαλον δέος, τον Ρόι της Ρόβερς, που περιμέναμε με αγωνία κάθε βδομάδα στο Αγόρι. Έστω κι αν ο δεύτερος ήταν επιθετικός. Κι αυτός ξανθός ήταν, βρετανικής καταγωγής, τον έλεγαν Ρόι και ήταν ...καθοριστικός, όπως κι ο Κάρολ στα ματς με τη Ρουμπίν.

Από εκεί και πέρα, ο Ολυμπιακός έπαιξε με τη φωτιά, γι΄ αυτό και εν τέλει έπαιξε με τον Κάρολ. Δεν «καθάρισε» το ματς όταν η ρωσική ομάδα ψαχνόταν μετά το γκολ - καραμπόλα που έφαγε, δεν ήταν προσεκτικός στα μετόπισθεν, δεν βοηθήθηκε άμεσα από τον πάγκο όταν ξεφούσκωσαν τα χαφ του (ειδικά ο Ιμπαγασάκος) κι αν ο Κάρολ δεν ανταποκρινόταν, ένα γκολ μπορεί να δημιουργούσε άγχος, πίεση και να άλλαζε τα δεδομένα. Πάντως, ο Ολυμπιακός συνολικά την άξιζε αυτή την πρόκριση. Δυο φορές την κέρδισε τη Ρουμπίν, δεν μπορεί και τις δύο να στηρίχθηκε μόνο στην τύχη, τον Ρόι της Ρόβερς, τον Μπεν Λίπερ, τον Μπλεκ και το Αγόρι. Εντάξει, βοήθησε κι η τύχη σε κάποιες στιγμές, ωστόσο η συνολική εικόνα των δύο αγώνων έδειχνε πως «την έχει» τη ρωσική ομάδα και πως μάλλον από υπερβολική σιγουριά την άφησε να ελπίζει ως το τέλος.

Εγώ πάντως Ντέιβιντ μεγάλωσα με τον Ρόι Ρέις…

Ο Ρόι Ρέις υπήρξε για μένα ο μεγαλύτερος Αγγλος ποδοσφαιριστής του καιρού μας κι ας έχω δει μόνο εικονογραφημένα στο Μπλεκ και το Αγόρι του κατορθώματα του. Ο Ρόι δεν ήταν σταρ της τηλεόρασης όπως ο Ντέιβιντ Μπέκαμ. Δεν έχανε τα πέναλτι στον τελικό του Τσάμπιονς λιγκ όπως ο Τζον Τέρι.

Δεν πήγε ποτέ να παίξει στη Γερμανία όπως ο Κέβιν Κίγκαν. Κυρίως κέρδισε δυο φορές το Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο, πράγμα που η μετά το 1970 αστέρες της Εθνικής Αγγλίας δεν έχουν ούτε καν φανταστεί. Ο Ρόι ήταν αρχηγός της Μέλτσεστερ Ρόβερς αρχικά και στη συνέχεια προπονητής της. Ηταν παντρεμένος με την Πένι και είχε δυο κόρες κι ένα γιό τον Ρόκι, που κάποια στιγμή έγινε κι αυτός ποδοσφαιριστής χωρίς όμως να έχει την κλάση και τα μαγικά πόδια του μπαμπά του.
