January

1975, 18^th: Rovers are knock-out in 3^rd round of F.A. Cup losing an away match (2:1) against Sleeford Town non-league amateurs. The debut of Circus crew member Sammy Spangler was a real tragedy for Rovers.

1975, 26^th: Roy Race is appointed as Melchester Rovers’ manager, after leaving of Tony Storme.

1982, 1^st: Sir Alf Ramsey becomes Melchester Rover’s manager, replacing Roy Race who has been shot and remains in a coma.

February

1960, 13^th: Bobby Charlton is in writing charge for Roy of the Rovers series in Tiger comic.

1962, 3th: Tubby Morton appears as a guest star in a T.V. show, thanks to his glorious presence in F.A. Cup Final against Corstone City of past season.

Ο… Ολλανδός Ρόυ Ρέης!

Χτες, αναζητώντας κάποια ποδοσφαιρικά στατιστικά από το αρχείο της παλαιάς εφημερίδας Αθλητική Ηχώ, το οποίο παρεμπιπτόντως βρίσκεται αναρτημένο στην ιστοσελίδα gazzetta.gr έπεσα πάνω σε μία αναπάντεχη ανακάλυψη! Την 1^η Φεβρουαρίου του 1959 η εφημερίδα ξεκίνησε να δημοσιεύει ένα κόμικ-στριπ (με τρία καρέ τη φορά) που εστίαζε σε έναν διάσημο ποδοσφαιριστή, ακαθόριστης εθνικότητας. Ο τίτλος της σειράς (στα ελληνικά) ήταν Ο Σέντερ Φορ με τα Μαγικά Πόδια, δίχως άλλες λεπτομέρειες για την προέλευσή του. Αντί για τα «μπαλονάκια» που ξέρουμε, υπήρχε μικρό κείμενο στο κάτω μέρος των καρέ. Καθώς κάτι τέτοιες έρευνες στο χώρο του κόμικ με «εξιτάρουν» ιδιαίτερα, το έψαξα κάπως. Γρήγορα βρήκα πως πρόκειται για μία δημιουργία ενός Ολλανδού σχεδιαστή, ονόματι Henk Sprenger (3.1.1919 – 29.12.2005).

An interview with legendary Rover's skipper Roy Race!

Κατέβηκα από το αεροσκάφος της «Ολυμπιακής» μόλις πατήσαμε στο περίφημο αεροδρόμιο  Χίθροου του Λονδίνου μετά από πτήση μερικών ωρών δίχως, ευτυχώς, απρόοπτα. Ο καιρός ήταν συννεφιασμένος (τι πρωτότυπο!) και πήρα το τοπικό τρένο με προορισμό το Μέλτσεστερ, στο Νότια Αγγλία. Λίγο πριν μπούμε στην πανέμορφη αυτή πόλη της Βρετανίας, το βλέμμα μου τράβηξε η όχθη του γραφικού ποταμού Μελ, από τον οποίο εξάλλου πήρε και το όνομά της. Σίγουρα κάπου εδώ, στις χορταριασμένες όχθες του, ένα όμορφο καλοκαιρινό σούρουπο, ο Ρόυ, νεαρός ακόμη, την περίοδο που έπαιζε στη σχολική ομάδα της περιοχής, θα φλέρταρε με κάποια κοπέλα που του άρεσε. Εδώ ίσως και να έδωσε τα πρώτα του ερωτικά φιλιά, πριν ακόμα αφοσιωθεί ολοκληρωτικά στη μεγάλη του άλλη αγάπη, τη «στρογγυλή Θεά» του ποδοσφαίρου!

Our Roy of the Rovers Greek fan Club members would be happy, hearing from you.

Hi Nikos and a warm Hello to all the Greek ROTR fans. Always a pleasure!

Would you like to share your thoughts concerning comics in the U.K. and elsewhere?

I am not really up on the current state of Comics in today's World but I think they will continue in some form or another. I was lucky to have worked in their Golden Years!

What do you think about the future of «classic» comics in Britain?

I think there will always be a market for Comics that we read in our youth which gave us such fond memories and I am glad I was part of that!

Do you know if there is a possibility of launching new RotR stories by Rebellion?

The last time I spoke to Rebellion's ROTR Editor it seems unlikely but, never say never!

Are you in any touch with the other great RotR artist Paul Trevillion?

Sadly, I have never met or spoken to Paul but I am an admirer of his work and legacy.

Do you know whether Barrie Tomlinson is willing to write any new book about Roy and Rovers?

I am sure that Barrie has a lot more ROTR stories left to tell and will put some out there if he can find the time to put pen to paper. He is such a great story teller!

We all would be very happy if you could send us a Roy sketch signed with your wishes.

• Copa Libertadores 1979: Won by Olimpia Asunción after defeating Boca Juniors on an aggregate score of 2–0.
• European Cup 1979: Won by Nottingham Forest after defeating Malmö FF 1–0 in the Final.
• Intercontinental Cup 1979: Won by Olimpia Asunción after defeating Malmö FF by an aggregate score of 3–1. This was the last time the Intercontinental Cup was played in two legs (South America and Europe).
• May 22 – Ruud Krol becomes Holland's most capped player in history when he plays his 65th match for the Netherlands national football team against Argentina.
